Why Is My Car Leaking Water?

oil leaking from an old car

If your vehicle is leaking water, don’t fret! Most of the time, it’s not a pressing issue since the car’s air conditioning system creates condensation anytime it’s activated. It’s normal for drivers to see small puddles of water near the back of the vehicle’s engine compartment. Also, water that’s near the tailpipe is usually condensation from the exhaust, and that goes away after your muffler warms up. Even so, there can still be serious issues associated with leaking fluids. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the INFINITI of Boerne service center near New Braunfels for an inspection.

Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

Do you see water leaking from under the car? Follow the steps below to see where the fluid is coming from:

  • Put a clean, white sheet of paper under the leak. If the fluid is not water, you will see the color on the paper. If the colors are blue, green, or yellow colors, it’s most likely coolant and not water.
  • If there is a lot of water is coming from your exhaust, it may be a blown gasket causing the coolant to be burned along with the fuel. This results in large amounts of water and white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.
  • While the coolant is easy to spot because of its color, you should check the level to make sure everything is normal. If it’s low, bring it to our service center as soon as possible.
  • There is a chance that the leak is coming from a cracked windshield wiper fluid reservoir that’s caused by using water in your wiper fluid. The water freezes in the reservoir, which expands and causes the plastic container to crack. You will know it’s windshield wiper fluid because it’s either a light green or light blue color. Also, it will leak by the front tires.

If the cause is from something other than condensation, it’s essential to have your vehicle inspected by our INFINITI-trained and certified technicians.
